The prophet Ezequiel is taken by the angel of the Lord, and he is going down into deep waters, an ankle-deep, a knee-deep, a waste deep, and a full body deep. It is not until Ezequiel crosses the river that he finally can see the living water flowing from the temple. He could see the life-giving power of God, especially in the trees from which “fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
In the Gospel, we hear of someone who has been wanting to go into the deep waters of a pool to find healing. Instead, he meets Jesus at whose word, “the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.” Now the new temple is Jesus, and the flowing water is his word.
There are times in our lives that we might feel like Ezequiel, going into deep waters, or like the man of the Gospel, in need of someone to help us get into deep waters. It seems that the mystery of life unfolds into the deep waters of our need for nourishment, healing, and wholeness. Lent is a season to go deeper into the life-giving power of God that now flows from His son Jesus Christ himself in the Church and in the world through the Holy Spirit.
